The city of Oulu is in northern Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia on the Baltic Sea. It is the country`s sixth largest city and the northernmost metropolis in the European Union. Earlier, salmon fishing was an important to the local economy, but today the IT industry, wood processing and steel production are the primary economic engines. Moreover, Oulu is an important university centre. Every year Oulu is in the news when the Air Guitar World Championship event is held. 13 kilometres southeast of the city is the Turkansaari open air museum, where 27 historical wooden buildings can be visited. In addition, Oulu has an art museum and a maritime museum. The cathedral built in 1776, with the oldest oil paintings in Finland, and the city hall from 1886, with its magnificent Bohemian crystal chandeliers are both worth a visit.

There is a free ferry from Oulu to Hailuoto Island to the west o the city. One third of the island is a dedicated bird refuge.

Near Kalajoki are very beautiful sand dunes and beaches. On the islands between Vaasa and Kokkola are many old fishing villages. Picturesque wooden houses are part of the landscape in the coastal cities.
