Pune (also known as Poona or Puna) has over 3 million residents and, following Mumbai, it is the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The city is located at an elevation of 560 metres above sea level on a plateau in the Deccan mountains. At first glance, this city does not appear very inviting. But give it a second glance - in Pune there are certainly many nice areas to discover such as the temple and the palace on Parvati Hill. These are among the city`s oldest historical monuments. From Parvati Hill visitors also have super overview of the city.  At the foot of the hill is the Saras Baag Garden. At the centre of the garden is a temple honouring the god Ganesha, which is surrounded by a small lake. Also located on a hill with a beautiful view is the famous Chaturshringi Temple from the 17th century with a stone likeness of the goddess of the same name. In the heart of the city is Shaniwar Wada, a palace and governmental seat of the Peshwas, or Brahmin ministers. Unfortunately only the entrance gate and the base walls of the fortress are left. The Pataleshwar caves are home to a temple carved into a cliff that holds a Shiva shrine and Nandi bull. The temple is still used today by practising Hindus for prayer or meditation. Pune became known internationally when the Osho Ashram became a pilgrimage site for Bhagwan believers from all over the world. The British colonial rulers confined Mahatma Gandhi and his wife in the Aga Khan Palace in Pune, where Gandhi`s wife later died. Their room and a memorial can be visited on the grounds.

A recommended outing takes visitors to the edge of the city to the Lion`s Fort (Sinhagad) from the 14th century. It is located at the peak of a mountain and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.
