The name Busan means "kettle mountain" - and the city really does lie in a kettle-shaped valley, surrounded by mountains and open towards the coast.

Near Busan are the two seaside resorts of Haeundae and Songjong. Particularly Haeundae, with its sandy beaches and mineral springs is also very popular among the Koreans as well. Hot springs can also be found at the resort area of Tongae.
