Accra – On Africa`s west coast

Accra is the capital of Ghana. With two million residents, it is the largest city in this West African nation as well as its administrative and economic centre. The largest shopping centre is the Accra Mall near the airport. There you can find everything that is hard to find in the rest of the city. Every day merchants from the local villages sell their products at the Makola Market, a street market that extends for quite a distance along Kojo Thompson Road. In Osu there are a few European restaurants and even an Irish pub. At the Centre for National Culture you can purchase traditional arts and crafts. This national museum houses a comprehensive collection of Ghanaian art.

Recommended day trips near Accra: The refreshing climate in Aburi, located in the Akuapim Hills about 40 kilometres north of Accra makes it a popular destination. In the Botanical Garden, created during colonial times, there is a large collection of subtropical trees and plants. The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is easy to reach by car. Here there are 31 different types of mammals, including the rare Puku antelope, which you can view in their natural habitat. Ada Foah is a popular recreation area at the mouth of the Volta River. Here, with a little luck, anglers can catch Nile bass and barracudas. The nearby Songor Lagoon conservation area is home to a variety of rare birds.
