Unwind after a day in the ‘big city jungle’ on one of the city’s cosy beaches along the River Spree. If you don’t like crowded places the Stralau beach bar is perfect for you. A true secret!
Berlin never goes to sleep! Life in this metropolis is pulsating so heavily you almost feel the ground vibrating under your feet. More than 1500 events take place daily. In addition tourists from all over the world add to the cosmopolitan flair of the city. Since the fall of the Wall at the beginning of the nineties there has been a euphoric mood - this is particularly noticeable in the Eastern part of the city around the Hackeschen Höfe and the Prenzlauer Berg. Experience one of the most exciting cities in Europe.
Sightseeing: The government district with the Bundestagsgebäude (government building) is an architectural highlight and the place where the Eastern and Western parts of the city meet. It is only one of the many exciting parts of the city. From there you can take a leisurely stroll to the Brandenburg Gate, cruise around the Pariser Platz and then amble on the boulevard Unter den Linden past impressive mansions. The magnificent opera building of the Staatsoper stands out among all the others. Also worth seeing: the Gendarmenmarkt with its two cathedrals and the Schauspielhaus with the marble memorial to Schiller in front, as well as the Charlottenburg Palace in the west of the city - a Prussian oasis with the charm of the Versailles palace.
Shopping: Apart from London’s Harrods, the KaDeWe on Kurfürstendamm is the biggest department store on the continent. The food department is particularly impressive with its wide range of fancy food from all over the world. The shopping arcade at the Potsdamer Platz has something for every taste. People with more eccentric tastes will definitely find something at the Neue- and Alte Schönhauser streets and the Hackeschen Höfe. That’s where young designers offer trendy fashion, small craft shops sell their own pieces of work and antique stores tempt with all sorts of knick knacks. The upmarket Friedrichstraße features all the big names of the fashion world from Armani to Yves Saint Laurent. Tip: Pop in to the Automobilforum Friedrichstraße.
Art & Culture: The New National Gallery at the Potsdamer Platz, a new building designed by famous architect Mies van der Rohe, impresses time and again with extraordinary special exhibitions of art of the 20th century - most recently with an exhibition from the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The old national gallery on the Museum Island displays art of the 19th century from classicism to impressionism. Visitors at the Pergamon Museum, which first opened in 1930, go back in time to the ancient world. It is named after the restored altar of Pergamon, the highlight of the antiquity collection. The Story of Berlin is told at the same-named Kunsthaus am ’Kudamm’. For anyone who likes kitsch, go to the Friedrichstadtpalast : the ‘longest girls row in the world’ with 64 legs is quite an attraction.
