The Canadian city of Calgary gained international fame as the host of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. Calgary is located in southern Alberta and is the province's largest city. The Calgary Zoo and Prehistoric Park is one of the best zoos in North America. From the Calgary Tower visitors have a magnificent view of the Rocky Mountains, which lie about 80 km west of the city. Because it is located so close to the Rocky Mountains, Calgary is a natural starting point for day trips and longer discovery tours of the National Parks in the Canadian section of this impressive mountain chain.
