For a purely natural experience, you can visit one of the many national parks in northwestern North Carolina. Numerous hiking trails wind through the mountains and foggy forests, with picnic and fishing areas along the way. You can also take a canoe trip on the New River, which meanders through the central Appalachian Mountains. The New River State Park near the charming city of Jefferson includes more than 250 hectares (625 acres) of land. Terrific waterfalls await you in South Mountains State Park. Bears and white-tailed deer can still be found in the foggy forests of Grandfather Mountain National Park. The best ski areas are located near Blowing Rock and Banner Elk.
