Donetsk, a city of over one million residents, is at the centre of the Ukrainian Donets Basin (Donbas) coal region. It is Ukraine`s fifth largest city. In Donetsk there is an opera house, a theatre and a recently built, modern soccer stadium for the home games played by Shakhtar Donetsk. Donetsk is surrounded by a steppe landscape. Most of the flat areas near the city are used for agriculture. There are also small forests and lakes here. Donetsk is located on the Kalmius River, which flows into the Azov Sea 120 kilometres to the south. Ukraine`s most popular area for holidays is located there as well.
