Located at the heart of Finland's capital, the Senate Square is home to the country's three most prominent public buildings, Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace and the main building of the University of Helsinki. With three symphony orchestras, the new opera house and many art galleries and museums, Helsinki also offers many cultural opportunities. The parks, forests, coastal trails and lakes surrounding Helsinki invite visitors to take a day trip to the country. Historical churches and old manor houses can be found everywhere, along with the modern structures designed by famous Finnish architects. And many excellent and scenic cross country trails start right at the edge of town. Cross country skiing is Finland's most popular leisure activity in winter.
