Izmir is affectionately known as the "Pearl of the Aegean" - and rightly so:  The Gulf of Izmir is one of the most beautiful bays along the entire Aegean coast. The landmark of this metropolis of 3.5 million inhabitants is the marble clock tower, which rises 25 m above the harbour. Izmir displays Western and multicultural influences - enjoy the hustle and bustle of the promenade or the famous Kemeralti bazaar! From Izmir, it's just a stone's throw to the fine sand on the beaches of the Cesme peninsula and the famous archaeological sites of Ephesus, Miletus and Pergamon.
