The polish city of Katowice is located in Upper Silesian coal basin, about 250 km southwest of the capital of Warsaw. This metropolis of 330,000 residents forms the centre of an urban region, which is home to almost 3.5 million people. In the industrial area of Upper Silesia and around Katowice there are extensive coal and ore deposits. The city is among the most important economic centres in Poland. At the same time, it is also the most important cultural metropolis in the Silesian Voivodeship, with numerous churches and museums.

The most famous museum in the city of Katowice is the Silesian Museum. Among its collections are primarily ethnological and archaeological exhibit pieces related to the city and the region of Upper Silesia. In addition, there is a gallery of Polish paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.
