As you approach for landing you can already see the never-ending coastline softly winding along the Pacific. Then you notice the checkerboard of streets and, of course, the famous Hollywood sign in the hills. Even if you were never in LA, you still are familiar with many of its highlights from television: Venice Beach, Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive, celebrity meeting place and the most expensive shopping boulevard in the world. Joshua Tree National Park in Palm Springs offers a contrast to the city's glamour. Some of its Joshua Trees are more than 1000 years old.
