Liège is an industrial city of 600,000 residents located on the Meuse River in Belgium. Liège is the cultural centre of the French speaking region of Wallonia, which includes five provinces. Many historical buildings provide reminders of the city's stirring thousand year history: for example, the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Jacques, the Romanesque St. Bartholomew's Church and the Liège Cathedral (St. Paul's), which was first built in the 10th century. The 18th century City Hall and the Place St. Lambert and Perron fountain are among the city's landmarks. Also worth a visit are the Curtius Museum of archaeology and decorative arts and the Museum of Modern Art, which houses works by Monet, Picasso, Gauguin and Chagall, among others.
