This former Russian metropolis of over one million is located about 1100 kilometres northeast of Moscow on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The climate in Perm is continental. The city has an opera house, a theatre and a famous puppet theatre. Other cultural institutions include the Gorky Library, the State Circus and the State Art Gallery, housed in a former cathedral. In addition, Perm has a planetarium, a zoo and large museum of local history with about 360,000 items on exhibit. A special tourist attraction is a country estate near the city that Boris Pasternak used as a model for important scenes in his novel, Doctor Zhivago.
