Riyadh is a modern city. It is the economic and cultural centre of Saudi Arabia and has numerous universities and museums. As the country´s administrative centre, the capital is home to the seats of government and the parliament as well as many diplomatic representatives. The high-rise buildings called Al Faisaliyah and Al Mamlaka/Kingdom Centre are among the city´s landmarks. Moreover, Riyadh is an important transportation hub in the Arabian world, with pilgrim routes to Mecca and Medina. Since 1824, the main palace of the royal house of Saud has been located in the city. Besides the "Fort Qasr al Masmuk" fortress and a few palaces near Deera Square, there is not much of the old town left. The capital city has numerous parks and green spaces as well.
