With slightly more than one million residents, Rostov-on-Don is one of the largest cities in the European part of Russia. It is located in the southern section of the Russian Confederation, just 45 kilometres from where the Don empties into the Azov Sea and is the gateway to the Caucasus. Tourist attractions include the art gallery, various large churches such as the huge Resurrection Cathedral, the state museum, the music theatre and the circus. In the summer, a variety of parks and the shores of the Don River invite visitors to linger, with snack bars, boating piers and beaches.
