With three million residents, the capital of the Dominican Republic is the second-largest city in the West Indies, right after Havana. Santo Domingo was the first capital of Spanish America. The old town was carefully restored, so the charm of the colonial structures remains for the most part. The university, the cathedral and the current hospital were the first buildings constructed by the Spanish in the New World.
