The city of Shenyang, with 4.5 million residents, is located in the northeastern part of China. Today, this former imperial city is the cultural and economic centre of northeastern China. Shenyang offers a variety of tourist attractions. Particularly the ruins of the imperial palace, the small precursor to the more famous Forbidden City in Beijing and the two imperial tombs within the city are worth a visit. Both monuments are located in large parks. Beiling Park is about the size of Central Park in New York City. The four pagodas here are also worth visiting. They were built around the "Forbidden City", one at each of the cardinal directions. Bird Island Park to the east of Shenyang is a popular destination for outings. Visitors can also see the sea aquarium and an international garden exhibition there.
