The largest city in Dalmatia has a rich history, which is best experienced on foot in the pedestrian zone in the Old Town. Diocletian's Palace extends across large sections of the Old Town. The Roman Caesar of the same name had it built as a retirement residence. Today, lively terrace cafés are located in the pillared inner courtyard. The cathedral with its majestic walnut portal is also worth a look. From the ferry harbour, you can reach the holiday islands and archipelagos near the coast. Or from Split you can travel by car to one of the countless bays and numerous Venetian cities on the beautiful Dalmatian coast.
