Tokyo – Shrines, sushi, stunning flowers

The amount of things to see in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is just incredible: from the Emperor's Palace and the lively Asakusa quarter with its plethora of shopping and amusement attractions to a wide variety of shrines, temples and tremendously landscaped gardens. The Asakusa Kannon Temple is the oldest in the country. In Shibuya, in the western section of the city, is the national park that contains the Meiji Shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji. The Museum of Modern Art is worth a visit for its architecture alone. The most interesting exhibitions of modern art in all of Japan are shown here.

From Tokyo it doesn't take long to reach the Boso Peninsula and the beautiful beaches of Shirahama. In February, the Kairaku-en park in Mito is especially lovely when the plum trees are in bloom. One of the most popular destinations for an outing in Japan is the Nikko temple complex, 140 kilometers north of Tokyo. The magnificent temples and mausoleums are located in a national park in the mountains. The carving of three monkeys, one with its eyes closed, one with its hands over its ears and one with its hands over its mouth, is the most famous piece in these temples. The region around Nikko is also famous for its colorful leaves in the autumn.
