Tripoli

The Libyan capital of Tripoli is located on the Mediterranean coast in the northwestern part of this north African country. It is home to about 1.8 million residents and is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. The old town of Tripoli is a typical northern African quarter with many narrow alleys and mosques. The old fort of the knights of Malta is worth a visit as is the Roman triumphal arch from the 2nd century. At al Jazair square are impressive houses from colonial times.

During the Libyan civil war, until it was liberated by Libyan rebels, the city was a stronghold of the Gaddafi regime. During the international military intervention, Tripoli was bombed several times by NATO air forces. Since the dictator was overthrown, an interim government has been in power. Battles between rival militias are a frequent occurrence.
