Above all, it is the churches and monasteries that have left their stamp on the Ukrainian capital. Most significantly, the five-nave St. Sophia Cathedral, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. The famous Kiev Pechersk Lavra, or Monastery of the Caves, larges parts of which are accessible only to pilgrims carrying candles, has earned the same laurels. The monastery church of St. Michael with its golden dome is another sacred architectural gem. Our tip: explore Kiev by steamboat on the Dnieper River.
