Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is the largest metropolis in western India and the capital of the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai is both a busy harbour city and modern industrial metropolis. Modern skyscrapers and glass-covered buildings share space with the countless small markets.  The famous Bollywood films are produced in the Mumbai studios. More films are made here now than in Hollywood. The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is one of India`s best horse racing tracks. The city`s most well- know landmark is the Gateway of India. From here you can take a tour boat to Elephanta Island. With their fascinating cliff carvings, the cave temples created in the 8th century amaze visitors today. If the popular Juhu Beach - 30 kilometres north of the city centre - is too crowded for you, outside of Mumbai there are still a great many delightful beaches from which you can choose.
