With 280,000 residents, Newark is the largest city in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The city was founded in 1666 by immigrants from the English city of Newark. It is located at the mouth of the Passaic River on the Atlantic Ocean, just 16 kilometres from New York.

In terms of American cities, Newark is quite old. Its nickname, befitting its age, is "The Brick City". It is well known as an arts and cultural centre and charms visitors with its lively atmosphere. The New Newark Museum houses a comprehensive art collection. East of Newark is Ellis Island and the small island on which the world famous Status of Liberty was built. North of Newark is Palisades Interstate Park with 250 acres of hiking trails, picnic areas and a nature preserve.
