A city of at least one million residents, Nizhny Novgorod (formerly Gorky) is located where the Oka flows into the Volga. This city, which is over 750 years old, features numerous interesting structures, including many churches and monasteries. For those interested in architecture, Nizhny Novgorod is Russia`s showpiece. This reputation comes not only from the attractive groups of buildings in the magnificent, historical old town, but also the many modern structures from the recent past.

The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is the city`s historical centre. This complex, completed in 1515, includes 15 towers. The Archangel Michael Cathedral, completed in 1631, and an arsenal built under Czar Nicholas I, in which exhibitions of international contemporary art are shown, are also located on the Kremlin grounds. A special attraction is the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum, with its 12,000 exhibit pieces, including numerous works by important Russian artists.
