The city of Odessa, with over one million residents, is the most important Ukrainian harbour city on the Black Sea. In addition, it is a significant industrial centre and the location of many cultural and scientific institutions. Furthermore, Odessa is a spa and health resort with a long tradition. Odessa`s landmark is the Potemkin Stairs, which lead from the old town to the pretty promenade along the sea. Many boat tours are offered from the piers at the harbour. Other sites worth a visit are the opera house, the Philharmonic Society, the Vorontsov Palace and the Odessa Orthodox Cathedral. In the Archaeological Museum are exhibits of finds from ancient Egypt and the Black Sea region. In the Museum of Western and Eastern Art works by Rubens, Brueghel and Caravaggio can be seen. The Botanical Garden, numerous parks and the city beaches offer many options for enjoying the outdoors. From Odessa it is not far to the Crimean peninsula where there are many resorts and beaches.
