The Chinese capital of Beijing (Peking) can look back on a history of at least 3000 years. One of the most impressive sights here is the Imperial Palace in the Forbidden City. The palace is an architectural masterpiece and in 1987 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. It consists of six main palaces with magnificent halls and numerous annexes and gardens.

Tiananmen Square is also worth a visit. The "Gate of Heavenly Peace" is the largest public square in the world. It is surrounded by museums, parks and the university. In 1989, the Chinese army brutally suppressed the peaceful democracy movement here. From the heights of Mei Shan Park the view of Beijing is breathtaking and you can easily see the city's symmetrical layout. Of the many temple complexes, particularly the Temple of Heaven, dating from the 15th century, the Lama Temple and the Temple of Confucius are noteworthy. Beihai Park is one of the capital's most beautiful.

The Summer Palace, with its gorgeous gardens, was used by the emperors of the Qing dynasty as a summer residence. The palace is located on Kunming Lake, 20 kilometers from Beijing. The Great Wall is also easy to reach from the capital city. This impressive structure, 5400 kilometers long and 2600 years old and made of granite and brick, is among the world's seven wonders.
