The capital city of the Azores, Ponta Delgada is located on the island of São Miguel, the largest of the nine islands in the archipelago. This group of islands is located 1600 kilometers southwest of Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Ponta Delgada is home to numerous churches, magnificent old buildings and a historical old town. The pace is leisurely in the idyllic parks and on the narrow streets with their pretty balconies - not a trace of the hustle and bustle of many capital cities. In the evenings, people meet each other for a stroll along the promenade or on one of the many plazas. São Miguel and the other islands of the Azores are a hiker's paradise: the islands' comfortable temperatures, lush subtropical vegetation and bizarre volcanic cones attract visitors all year long. In addition, the southern part of São Miguel is known for its fantastic sandy beaches. And if the Atlantic is too cold for you, the hot thermal springs in the islands' interior will warm you up again.
