The old town of Salvador de Bahia has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, Salvador is Brazil's Mardi Gras capital. At the largest Mardi Gras event in the world, the party goes on for six days and six nights. Salvador is also a center for Capoeira. This artistic martial arts dance was developed by African slaves. In addition to its folk traditions, the Gold Coast of the state of Bahia is primarily known for its fantastic beaches. Many of them are right at the edge of the city. The island of Itaparica also offers wonderful palm lined beaches that can be reached from Salvador in about 40 minutes by ferry.
