Under the auspices of Islam, many cultural traditions merged in the medina, or the old quarter in Tunis. Berbers, Arabs, Turks, Jewish merchants and Christian seafarers have left traces behind. From the 12th to the 16th century, Tunis was one of the largest and richest cities in the Islamic world. Today the old quarter is the largest old town in North Africa that has been preserved.
