TUI-Etihad joint venture negotiations terminated

Hanover, 8 June 2017. TUI Group and Etihad Aviation Group will not continue their negotiations about the planned joint venture between the German aviation subsidiary TUI fly and Niki. The goal of the talks between the two companies was to form a strong European leisure airline.
Sebastian Ebel, member of TUI AG’s Executive Board in charge of Central Region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland) said: “A strong European leisure airline continues to make great strategic sense. After all, the aviation sector is characterised by overcapacity in Germany. However, Niki is no longer available for a joint venture. We will push the repositioning of TUI fly further ahead in order to develop long-term prospects for the airline and its employees.”

TUI Group remains prepared to contribute to the stabilisation of the German aviation market. TUI therefore remains open for a partnership or the formation of joint ventures serving the strategic goal of reshaping the market.

Dr Dieter Nirschl to leave TUIfly after almost 10 years

Hanover, 26 April 2016. After successfully serving the company and the TUI Group for many years, Dr Dieter Nirschl, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Employee Relations Director at TUIfly GmbH, has decided to step down from his post as Managing Director with effect from 1 May 2016 and take up new challenges. Jochen Büntgen, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at TUIfly GmbH since 2015, will additionally take on Dr Nirschl’s remit.

Both the shareholders and Supervisory Board are grateful to Dr Nirschl for his long period of outstandingly successful service for TUI and wish him the very best in all his future endeavours. Supervisory Board Chairman Henrik Homann said: “TUI will greatly miss Dr Nirschl as a leader who is equally at home in the twin fields of tourism and aviation. We thank him most sincerely for his commitment to the Group, as demonstrated in various prominent positions he has held since 2001.”

Born in Landshut, Bavaria, Dr Nirschl started his professional career in 1994 with Düsseldorf-based airline LTU after completing his law degree. In 2001, he moved to the Hanover-based TUI AG as Corporate Human Resources Director. In 2007, he was appointed Managing Director and Employee Relations Director at the Group’s new in-house airline, TUIfly, created from the merger of the Hapagfly and HLX brands. He has been the airline’s CEO since 2009.
